Tips for good parenting

A couple in love and married happily often longs for a baby to complete the “family” picture. Well, it is then a matter of choice as to how big or small your family is going to be. But at least one baby, whose prattle will fill the house, is a delight for one and all.

Young mothers often panic at the thought of their newly acquired status, not knowing how to handle this new responsibility. As it may be, new fathers are in a similar state of mind. It is difficult enough to give birth to a child, but the journey that follows is a roller-coaster ride. Good parenting is a tricky art and you need to master it well so that your children grow up to be good, obedient and confident individuals.

Here are a few tips that will help you deal with the situation in an organized manner. To begin with, babies are like a ball of clay. Their mind is not set in any particular thought process, so it is easy to mould them the way you deem suitable. How well you mould it and shape it will decide your baby’s future and its character. It will also determine your skills in parenting.

A baby is very vulnerable and scared of the outside world. It is the parent’s duty to give it protection and make it feel secure. How does one do this? Well, pretty simple. Just spend quality time with your baby to give it the assurance that you are around to shield it against any adversity. The best way to bond with the baby is to be close to it physically as well as emotionally.

A baby understands the soothing touch of its parents; it is comforted by the gentle words and feels secure in the warm embrace of mother/father. Hence, it is essential to keep talking to your baby, so that it feels your presence. This mode of communication not only binds the baby and the mother, but also becomes the foundation of its language skills in the future because the baby grows up listening and grasping the words spoken to it.

Second important thing is that in the initial formative years of the child, especially till the age 2-3 years or till the time it starts going to a playschool, it is essential that the parents spend maximum time with the child. This is because we are trying to prepare the baby to adjust in the outside world and thus it needs to be emotionally stable and secure to experience the new things that it will soon encounter.

I know it is easy said than done, particularly in the present scenario where people are career minded and the couple needs to work to run a comfortable household. So many parents leave their babies within a couple of months in a crèche or daycare centre, after the maternity leave gets over. No doubt that the baby is well cared for at these places, but it cannot get the same love and upbringing of its parents.

Same applies to the food habits and choices that are typical to a particular household. Home cooked food is best for baby’s good health and the mother can easily monitor the nutritional factor too. These are little things that matter a lot. Hence, in order to bring up a healthy baby who is emotionally secure and happy, do give your time to this precious bundle of joy.
